Ranaviru Child with Medical Needs - Tharuka Tharinidini
Tharuka Tharindini (07 years old) lost her right leg following a serious road accident. She is the sister of a young soldier, Chandika Prasantha who served our motherland and is now struggling to lookafter his sister.
The doctors had to amputate her leg to save her life. She was prescribed a prosthetic limb, which will cost about Rs. 400,000.00. This amount is beyond their means. Ranaviru Fund appeal for funds from its supporters to raise sufficient funds to provide her with the prescribed limb, so she will Walk Again.
Update 2012.02.03
1) While we were collecting funds for Tharuka, she received a prosthetic leg free of charge from Sri Lankan School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (SLSPO)
2) A kind hearted gentlemen, after having got to know about Tharuka's plight, visited Tharuka at her home and built a very decent washroom with grab bars and other facilities.
3) Six months after receiving the SLSPO leg, in January 2012, Tharuka came to Colombo and visited SLSPO to adjust the height of the leg. The officers/technicians were very helpful and worked hard to ensure the height adjustments were done on the same day so that she does not have to make another visit to collect the leg. The next height adjustment is due in another 6 months. The officers said they probably might need to provide Tharuka with a new leg as the current one may not be adjustable any more.
4) The day after the height adjustment we showed Tharuka to Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Narendra Pinto at Lanka hospitals. We explained to Dr.Pinto that we had collected about 50% of the funds needed to provide an expensive prosthetic leg which is made in Germany. We also explained that we wanted his advice if the German made leg would be significantly better than the one she got from SLSPO. Dr.Pinto advised us that the SLSPO leg she got is of good quality and advised we should continue with the SLSPO leg until she stops growing. He advised us that we could opt for an expensive high quality leg after she stops growing. Dr. Pinto was very pleased regarding the way Tharuka walked with the new leg and said she had made good progress in just 6 months.
5) Tharuka’s home does not have electricity. They have a solar panel installed, but it has not being used for some time because the battery has run down. We found that they are using kerosene lamps which is an accident waiting to happen. We allocated 16,000/- for the immediate purchase of a generator.
6) A donor came forward to provide Thrauka with a monthly scholarship of 1500/-. These funds will be utilized to pay for English tuition lessons for Tharuka.
Update 2014.01.18
Since there is no urgent need to use the funds which were collected for Tharuka, with the permission of the donors we allocated those funds to FPS/MEDS/19 - K.L.D. Madusha Liyanage.
